Tribute & Message From The Family

MANSFIELD -- Michael "Papa" Joseph Phelan, 70, of Mansfield, TX, went to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer, Wednesday, March 19.

A viewing will be held from 2-6 pm Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, Mansfield, TX. Mass will be held at 6 pm followed by a Celebration of Life dinner at the church. He is preceded in death by his brother, Captain James Phelan, Chicago PD. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Christian Brothers of the Midwest.

He was born to the late James and Mary Phelan, Oct. 25, 1943, in Chicago, IL. Mike graduated from St. Mel Catholic High School in 1961 and attended DePaul University. He married the love of his life Jane Kathleen "Kathy" Phelan in 1966, and they lived together in the Chicago area, before relocating to Texas in 1989.

Mike retired from The Associates Commercial Corp. as VP of Sales after years of service. He was an avid golfer and could always be found near the 18th hole when he wasn't traveling or volunteering. He spent his life exploring the world including his favorite location, Ireland. He was an intelligent man that knew the value of humor and Irish wit. Mike was a man of faith and was Co-Chair of Fundraising for St. Jude raising thousands of dollars for a new church. His generous spirit helped many organizations including his volunteer efforts at Methodist Mansfield Hospital. His legacy lives on…

Papa is survived by his wife Jane and 5 loving children: Mary Ellen and Eric Heimann, of Austin, TX; Dawn and Mark Brandenburgh, of Tulsa, OK; James Phelan, of Chicago IL; Kathleen and Travis Dodd, of Burleson, TX; and Megan and Brandt Elias, of Tulsa, OK; and is also survived by eight grandchildren and his sister Mary Ann Kotas.

So sorry to learn of Mike's passing. He was always an inspiration and great fun to be around. His saying at work was "Work hard, Play hard" and he certainly lead us in both arenas. It was great having Mike and Kathy at our wedding in Dublin back in 1998. Darn - wanted to meet him again in Ireland to play golf one more time! ..... Tom & Fiona Ailor, Montpelier VA
