Ammo, My sweet Ammo. An angel among us here on Earth and now in Heaven. She
means so much to so many of us here. I just would like to take a moment and
share what she means to me and some special memories I have with her. She was
not only my great grandmother but also one of my role models, caregivers, and
most importantly a great playmate. I was so blessed to be able to spend quite a
bit of time with her and Buddy Bud when I was a child. They provided me not only
with a wonderful and loving environment, but also a fun one. Ammo was such a
trooper. She would play any game or make believe game I wanted too. She played
any role I asked her to and as many times as I wanted to over and over again. I
loved playing grocery store. Sometimes she would be the customer and I would be
the cashier and vice versa. I just felt like such a grown up getting to be the
cashier. I bet some days she probably had enough groceries to feed an army as
many times as I made her go shopping. After playing grocery store for a while,
then I might decide I wanted to play "Easter Eggs". She would go hide them all
over the house for me to find and then sometimes I would get to hide them for
her to find. This was my favorite game we would play together. However looking
back now probably one of the most special memories I can think of is the times
that I would ask her to sleep on a pallet with me on the floor. This was just so
fun to me. I thought it was the neatest thing ever that she would do this with
me. It was always a blue blanket she would lay out on the floor. I can still
picture it. Now, if she actually slept the whole night down there with me is a
mystery. And not sure it is a question I want to know the answer to. Oh, I
almost forgot. She had this pillowcase on her bed that was heavenly. It was the
softest thing in the world. I sure miss those nights sleeping with her. When I would wake up in the mornings, she would always have my juice and a
Flintstones vitamin waiting for me. Sometimes I would drink coffee like a grown
up with her and Buddy Bud. Through the years I would try coffee and couldn't
figure out why it never tasted as good as hers. I think it must be the plain
sugar on the saucer under the coffee cup that she hid there for me :) Most of
the days were spent playing these games or playing with the baby dolls she had
gotten for me. For lunch, we always went somewhere to eat. Buddy Bud and I would
make it a secret and Ammo would have to guess where we were going. This just
tickled me for some reason. Also when we were going to lunch, we would pass this
school where it seemed like hundreds of buses were parked. Every time I would
ask Ammo to count all the buses and she would count as fast as she could till we
passed them. I can hear her counting them now...She is one of the most important people in the story of my life. There are so

My mom was the most beautiful lady, inside and out! She was a single mom for several years and spent every moment she could reading me stories, playing dolls with me, teaching me to embroider at the age of 3, and singing "You Are My Sunshine" to me. As hard as times were during the war and afterwards, she always managed to see that I had everything I wanted. Because she was divorced and dating, she and my grandmother, who lived with us, would exchange their stamps that were given during the war. Mother would give Janie, my grandmother, the sugar and flour stamps, and Janie would give her the nylon hose and shoe stamps!!
She gave me the work ethics and values I have as an adult and I am a better person because of her. She taught me never to leave a job unfinished and to always do the best job I could at anything I attempted. She was an excellent cook and made everything from scratch! Even into her 80's, she was still making her pimento cheese from scratch! She made the most wonderful Peanut Butter Balls at Christmas (which took hours to make). Most of my friends asked for the recipe and still make them at Christmas to this date. When I was lucky enough to marry Ron Holliday who had three of the most beautiful daughters, Brenda, Donna, and Kay, my mom took them into her heart as if they were her own. She did the same with their children and grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and also my best friend!!! I shall miss her terribly!
